Rick Roe, Fire Chief/Executive Fire Officer
1.636147363024470000Chief Roe has been with the Clive Fire Department since 1989, starting as a paid-on-call member and being appointed Chief in 1998.  He attended Central College in Pella, Iowa, graduating in 1989 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Management.  Chief Roe holds the designations of Executive Fire Officer thru the National Fire Academy and Chief Fire Officer thru the Commission on Professional Credentialing.  In addition, Chief Roe is also a former President of Polk County Fire Chiefs Association, a former President of Iowa Association of Professional Fire Chiefs, a member of Missouri Valley Division of the International Association of Professional Fire Chiefs, and a Governor Appointed Member of Iowa Statewide Interoperable Communications Systems Board, as well  as being a member of Polk County Emergency Management Committee, Polk County E911 Board, and WestCom Regional Communications Center Management Committee. Prior to being hired as Chief in Clive, he worked as a Pension Consultant at the Principal Financial Group.
Clay Garcia, Assistant Chief - Fire Marshal

 Fire Marshal Clay Garcia began his career at the Clive Fire Department in 2009 as a part time Firefighter/Paramedic. Prior to his full time position at the Clive Fire Department as the Fire Marshal, Chief Garcia served as the Fire Marshal for the Windsor Heights Fire Department and as a lieutenant for the Norwalk Fire Department. Before Chief Garcia began his career in the fire service, he served in the US Navy as a Hospital Corpsman at Camp Lejune in North Carolina. Chief Garcia holds a bachelor’s degree in Fire Science and a Master’s degree in Public Administration – Organizational Leadership. Chief Garcia holds various state level fire and EMS credentials along with NFPA and ICC certifications. Chief Garcia also belongs to the Iowa Fire Marshals Association, Iowa Chapter of the International Association of Arson Investigators and National Fire Protection Association.

 Brian Helland, Assistant Chief--EMS

3.636147363022470000Assistant Chief Brian Helland began with the Clive Fire Dept. in 2008 in his current position of Chief of EMS.  Prior to his arrival with the CFD, Chief Helland held administrative EMS positions with West Des Moines EMS, and Overland Park, KS FD.  In addition to being a veteran paramedic in the field, Chief Helland is also a respected instructor of EMS having taught many basic and advanced level EMT classes, and is a regular presenter at continuing education seminars.  In addition, Chief Helland has been a long advocate and instructor of CPR to the general public and has dedicated countless hours to this cause.  In 2011, Chief Helland was recognized as the American Heart Association’s Health Care Professional of the Year.  Chief Helland sits on several regional, state, and national advisory committee’s, of which, an abbreviated list includes Iowa Comprehensive Cardiovascular and Stroke Task Force, American Heart Association’s Mission Lifeline Iowa STEMI Task Force, President of the Central Iowa EMS Service Directors, Iowa Trauma Education Foundation, and Iowa CPR Education Foundation.  Chief Helland is also a member of several professional organizations including American Heart Association, Advanced Life Support Committee, National Association of EMT’s, Iowa EMS Association, and the National Association of EMS Educators.

Eric Kallem, Assistant Chief--Training

4.636056448522300000Assistant Chief Kallem has proudly served the Clive Fire Department since 2001, and has been in emergency services since 1992.  Chief Kallem joined the Clive Fire Department as a firefighter/paramedic and was promoted to lieutenant in 2006 and served in that capacity for nine years before becoming the Assistant Chief of Training where he manages overall training, education and career development for department personnel. 

Prior to serving the City of Clive, Chief Kallem served as a paramedic for Dallas County EMS.  In addition to being a critical care paramedic in the field, Chief Kallem has volunteered for the Dallas Center Fire Department since 2000 as a firefighter, training officer and assistant chief.  He attended Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, graduating in 1993 with a Bachelor of Science degree.

Chief Kallem is also a member of several professional organizations including American Heart Association, Iowa Society of Fire Service Instructors, International Society of Fire Service Instructors, Iowa Firefighters Association, Fellowship of Christian Firefighters and Iowa EMS Association.

 

Dr. James Poole, Medical Director
5.635252879480570000Dr. James Poole has been the Medical Director of the Clive Fire Dept. since August of 2008.  Dr. Poole graduated with Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine in May 2002 from Des Moines Medical University, and then completed his residency in Emergency Medicine June of 2006 with Integris Medical Center in Oklahoma City, OK.  Dr. Poole is currently a full time Emergency Physician with Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.  His professional society memberships include the American Osteopathic Association, American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians, American College of Emergency Physicians, and the Polk County Medical Society.  Dr. Poole also currently serves as the Medical Director to Mercy College of Health Sciences, Pleasantville EMS, and the Windsor Heights Fire Dept.
           
Linda Adams, Administrative Assistant / Paramedic 

Adams - Close UpAdministrative Assistant / Paramedic Linda Adams has been with the Clive Fire Department since 2005 when she was hired as a part-time Paramedic.  In 2008 she was hired as a full-time Firefighter/Paramedic. That same year Linda completed her training requirements to operate as Engineer. In 2018 she was hired as a full-time administrative assistant. She is dedicated to providing administrative support to the department and Paramedic service to the community.
