An asphalt overlay is scheduled to be completed yet this construction season on portions of Meredith Drive and Warrior Lane. This project is a joint undertaking with both the City of Urbandale and the City of Waukee. Please refer to the mapping for a more detailed look at the project area. The overlay on Warrior Lane will extend from the end of existing concrete pavement in Waukee north to include the Meredith Drive intersection. The overlay on Meredith Drive will extend from the Warrior Lane intersection east a half mile to the end of existing asphalt pavement. The project scope consists of culvert removal and replacement, subgrade treatment, a 6-inch asphalt overlay placed in three separate lifts, pavement markings and granular shoulders.
Work on the project will be completed in two separate stages with Stage 1 including the north half of Warrior Lane and all work on Meredith Drive. This stage is currently scheduled to close beginning on Tuesday, September 7th. Full closures will remain in place overnight at the east and west construction limits on Meredith Drive and at the north side of the Meredith/Warrior intersection until the completion of all asphalt paving in Stage 1. An approximate duration for Stage 1 work is three weeks dependent on weather. The first stage will reopen before the Contractor is allowed to move to the south half of Warrior Lane and begin similar operations in Stage 2.
Updates will be provided below once construction is underway to identify the proposed work area on a given day or to provide notification of any weather-related postponements. These same updates will be provided via e-mail upon request. Please contact Jim Hagelie, Engineering Services Administrator, at firstname.lastname@example.org to be added to the distribution list.
10/15/2021: Three lifts of asphalt were placed earlier this week in Stage 2. As a result, all asphalt paving on the project has now been completed. Granular shoulders will be placed along the newly paved sections of Stage 2 today. While there will not be any full closures during shouldering, workers and equipment will again be in the area during these operations. Pavement markings (double yellow centerline and white edge lines) will be grooved in within the next 15 to 30 days once the new asphalt has cured. “Local Traffic Only” barricades and “No Pavement Markings” signage will remain in place at the project limits on both Meredith Drive and Warrior Lane until these operations have been completed. The majority of remaining outlying traffic control is expected to be removed by the end of the day making local access available from all ends of the project.
No additional project updates are anticipated until pavement marking operations are ready to begin.
10/8/2021: Subgrade preparation on the remaining areas to be paved was completed earlier this week. Paving operations are expected to start next Monday, October 11th at approximately 9:00 am after school bus pickups. Three paving days are anticipated with 3-inches of base course going down the first day followed by 1.5-inches of intermediate course and 1.5 inches of surface course on successive days. As always, construction schedules are subject to change and highly dependent on weather conditions. Additional e-mail notification will be provided as needed if paving operations are postponed or suspended.
Residents should continue to access the area to and from the north via Meredith Drive throughout paving operations. A flagger will be present at the Little Walnut Creek Drive and Warrior Lane intersection to provide additional direction during paving. There will be brief periods of no access while asphalt is being laid past the intersection. Additional e-mail notification will be provided on a daily basis during paving once access in one direction has been reestablished.
10/11/2021: No paving today due to rainy weather. Paving operations are now expected to start tomorrow, Tuesday, October 12th at approximately 9:00 am.
10/1/2021: The final surface lift of asphalt on Meredith Drive followed closely by shouldering operations was completed earlier this week. As a result, the east-west through traffic movement on Meredith Drive is expected to be reopened by the end of the day today. The first two lifts of asphalt have also been completed on the first 3/4 miles of Warrior Lane south of the Meredith Drive intersection. Placement of the final surface lift is currently underway with shouldering of these new sections of pavement anticipated to follow tomorrow, Saturday, October 2nd.
Construction operations will shift south next week to the remaining unpaved section of Warrior Lane beginning at the end of the new asphalt pavement and extending south to the edge of existing concrete pavement as you enter previously developed areas in the City of Waukee. Subgrade preparation operations are expected to begin next Monday moving south to north through this section and should take approximately two days to complete dependent on weather. These newly prepped areas will then be allowed to cure for the remainder of the week and will be open and accessible to local traffic. At this time, asphalt paving operations are expected to begin the following Monday, October 11th.
9/24/2021: The first of three lifts of asphalt was placed yesterday on Meredith Drive and on Warrior Lane from the intersection south to Tanglewood Drive. The second lift of asphalt is being placed today on these same sections of roadway. The remaining subgrade preparation in Stage 1 on Warrior Lane was also completed earlier this week. The final surface lift of asphalt on Meredith Drive followed closely by shouldering operations is expected to be completed by the middle of next week. Paving operations will then shift to Warrior Lane with completion of the first two lifts of asphalt in Stage 1 anticipated by the end of the week. Existing roadway closures on the east and west end of the work zone on Meredith will remain in place until the completion of asphalt paving operations there. Barring extended periods of inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances, the east-west through traffic movement on Meredith Drive is expected to be reestablished by the end of next week.
9/17/2021: Subgrade preparation on Meredith Drive and culvert removal/replacement at four locations on Warrior Lane were completed this week. Des Moines Asphalt is expected on-site next Tuesday to begin paving on Meredith Drive from the east end of the project limits heading west towards the Warrior Lane intersection. Subgrade preparation operations are also expected to continue next week on Warrior Lane heading south away from the Meredith Drive intersection. Existing roadway closures will remain in place during these operations with hard closures on the east and west end of the work on Meredith as well as on the north leg of the Warrior/Meredith intersection. As a result, access for residents in the area will again need to be gained to and from the south on Warrior Lane. Additional information will be relayed on a more frequent basis next week to those residents whose driveway access may be directly impacted by subgrade preparation and paving operations in Stage 1.
9/7/2021: Stage 1 closures went up earlier today on Meredith Drive and northern portions of Warrior Lane. The Contractor has started rough grading to reestablish the crown line on Meredith Drive and is hopeful that culvert removal and replacement at four locations on Warrior Lane in the closure area will be underway before the end of the week. As a reminder, it is intended that hard closures on the east and west end of the work on Meredith as well as on the north leg of the Warrior/Meredith intersection will remain in place until all asphalt paving is complete in this stage – potentially up to three weeks dependent on weather. Residents in the area should plan accordingly when making trips to and from individual residences during this timeframe.
