1,000 Books Before Kindergarten is an ongoing literacy program designed to encourage parents and caregivers to read 1,000 books with their children before they reach school age. We consider reading before kindergarten to start in the womb.  The program is based on research findings that show the more children interact with books, the more prepared they will be for reading on their own. This is the most fundamental way parents and caregivers can cultivate a solid base for lifelong reading and learning.

Who may register? Expecting parents eight months along and parents with children up to six years old may sign up for the program at the library circulation desk anytime of the year.

How does the program work? Upon sign up, parents will receive reading journals to track how many books they and others read to their children. For each 100 books, participants
are encouraged to visit the library to celebrate with stickers and receive the next journal pages. Once certain milestones have been reached, the library rewards those accomplishments with prizes. When participants have read 1,000 books before kindergarten, they have successfully completed the program.

Graduates of this reading program will be invited to celebrate at our annual Graduation and Kick off Party with family and friends. An invitation to our September 2020 party will be given upon completion of the program. If your goal is to finish by then, please mark your calendar for Thursday, September 17, 2020 at 6:15 p.m. to attend.
