What’s lurking underneath your sink? You might have Household Hazardous Waste! These are items that can be harmful to the environment and to people if not disposed of properly.
Household hazardous waste includes items such as stains and varnishes; drain and household cleaners; metal polishes and rust removers; and fertilizers, pesticides and weed killers. These items are very useful and safe when used correctly around the home, but dumping them down the drain, driveway or throwing them in the trash can harm our waterways and aquatic life, not to mention pets and possibly people.
Metro Waste Authority offers two drop-off locations in Bondurant and Grimes. For more information about dates, times and locations of drop off, phone 515-967-5512.
House-Side Collection is also available for a cost of $25. Please visit Clive City Hall to purchase this option. You will receive two (2) bins with lids, along with a clear plastic bag and tie to place your items in. Pick ups are scheduled for the second Friday of each month.

How do I dispose of latex paint?
Good news! Latex paint is water-based, meaning it is NOT hazardous, and can be safely disposed of at home. Take a can of paint and add cat litter, sawdust or shredded paper into it. Give it a good stir and leave the lid off to let it dry. When it’s dry, keep the lid off and toss the paint can into the garbage! If you have more than half a gallon of paint, pour the paint out onto strips of newspaper for drying. When it’s all dry – toss it in the garbage.
If you don’t want to take care of latex paint at home, MWA’s Regional Collection Center will accept latex paint for $1 per one-gallon container, and $5 for a five-gallon container. To find out more, visit www.mwatoday.com
