Porter Shelter Trail HMA Reconstruction Project

Porter Shelter Trail HMA Reconstruction Project

Updates:

10/11/19: The Contractor paved the first 3-inch lift of asphalt on the new trail alignment earlier this week. The final 2-inch surface lift of asphalt will hopefully be placed next week once the area dries out from recent rains. Final grading, backfilling, and restoration of disturbed areas will then need to be completed prior to reopening this section of trail.

9/27/2019: Grimes Asphalt & Paving mobilized to the project area mid-week and closed the section of trail to be reconstructed.  Grading operations along the proposed realignment are currently underway.  City Parks and Recreation crews have constructed and marked a temporary detour around the construction zone for trail users.

The City of Clive recently awarded a contract to Grimes Asphalt and Paving Corporation to reconstruct an approximate 800 foot section of the Greenbelt Trail west of NW 100th Street at the end of Maddox Parkway. This Project Map link shows the project vicinity and proposed improvements in more detail. This section of trail around Porter Shelter will be realigned away from Walnut Creek and repaved with 5-inches of hot mix asphalt (HMA). Other work items in the project scope include recycling the existing asphalt surface to use as subbase under the new pavement, raising the grade slightly in a few areas to improve drainage, and repaving trail connections to the playground and shelter house.

Work on the project is tentatively scheduled to start the week of September 23rd. This approximate start date and the schedule moving forward are largely dependent on weather conditions encountered this fall. Trail closures will be in place at the project limits shown once crews mobilize to the area and begin removals. An informal detour around the construction area will be marked in the field with some portions on grass surfaces and uneven terrain. Trail users are urged to use caution in and around the construction area. Final completion of the project is expected by mid-November. Please continue to visit this webpage during construction for periodic updates.
