Share Your Ideas on the Clark Street Design Concept
Over the past five months, Clive neighbors and businesses along and near Clark St (from 100th St. to 114th St.) and 114th Street (from University Ave. to Hickman Rd) have gathered to discuss improvements to these streets. These conversations have focused on Clark St. to date, but future meetings will focus more on 114th St. Why did we have these neighborhood discussions and why will there be more in the future?
- Because pavement conditions on Clark St. have deteriorated and the street needs to be reconstructed
- Because use patterns on both Clark St. and 114th St. have and will continue to evolve as the Metro grows
- Because a street reconstruction project is also a cost-effective time to improve water, sewer, stormwater infrastructure, and consider new neighborhood beatification investments
- Because major street investments are scheduled for Clark and many surrounding streets starting summer 2019 through 2024
In the course of the discussions, City staff, residents, and businesses together built a broad consensus on the priority goals for the Clark St. project.
Long-term fix for the street pavement
Slow down vehicle traffic
Make it less appealing for drivers to use Clark St. and nearby neighborhood streets as a cut-through or shortcut
Improve safety for walkers, runners, cyclists, and people of all ages and abilities
Design Clark St. more as a local neighborhood street than a collector street
Address pavement conditions on other streets in the neighborhood as well
In addition to achieving the priority goals of the neighborhood, the Clark St design must also align with the City's regulations, strategic priorities, and best practices, and deliver long-term value for taxpayers.
While the neighborhood discussions generated broad consensus on the project's priority outcomes, there was no consensus on how to achieve them.
City staff--using input from residents, businesses, City staff, and traffic engineers--created a Clark St. design concept and presented it to the neighborhood on June 24th. Staff will present this design to the City Council at their regular meeting on July 11th at 6:00 P.M. at Clive City Hall. Staff will also present a set of alternative options specifically for the 8 foot neighborhood trail included in the current plan. You can review the plan and comment on it on the City's Open Forum platform here: https://www.opentownhall.com/portals/205/Issue_7644
This has been a very civil and collaborative process to date, and the City Council and staff welcome additional comments about the proposed design and trail alternatives. We hope those of you interested in this project are able to attend the July 11th Council meeting and share your ideas. In addition to commenting on the Clive Open Forum page, you may email comments to firstname.lastname@example.org, or call City Public Works at 515-223-6231. Thanks for your ongoing participation!
