Christmas trees will be collected in Compost It! communities on your regular garbage day between December 30 and January 10.
Metro Waste Authority asks all residents to “de-trim” their trees. Ornaments, tinsel, tree stands, and other decorations should be removed from trees before placing them at the curb. Trees that have been placed in plastic bags will not be collected. Wreaths are also not accepted. These items can harm the composting equipment and workers at the MWA’s Metro Compost Center.
You must attach a $1.20 “Compost-It” sticker to each tree that you have. The tree will not be picked up if any other stickers are attached. They need to be the Green sticker that says “Compost-It” and not the Yellow “Extra Trash Pick Up” sticker.
This is also the last time any remaining yard debris is collected before spring. Use a Compost It! cart or bags, or attach Compost It! stickers to generic bags to ensure your yard waste is picked up.
For more information about yard waste collection, visit Metro Waste Authority at www.WhereItShouldGo.com or call 515-244-0021.
Water Meter Change Out
WATER METER CHANGE OUT
BETWEEN NW 142ND STREET AND NW 159th STREET
The Public Works Department is in the process of replacing aging water meters. Accuracy is lost as water meters near the end of their usable life.
In the coming months crews will be focusing on households located in the area between NW 142nd and NW 159th. The meter change out requires us to enter the house to replace the water meter or water meters. This procedure normally takes 15 to 20 minutes.
The area will be sectioned into neighborhoods and we will send letters to residents accordingly, explaining the system and offering the opportunity to make an appointment for the water meter replacement. We will also knock on doors during the workweek to try and catch residents at home. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

HELP CLEAR SNOW FROM FIRE HYDRANTS
The Fire Department asks all residents with fire hydrants located near their home or abutting their property to assist in clearing an area around those hydrants. If possible, clear hydrants 5 feet on each side to give the Fire Department the quickest and best access. Every second counts in an emergency. We also request that commercial and retail businesses assist in clearing the snow from around private hydrants that may be located on or near their properties.
Please remember when clearing your drive, DO NOT pile snow around or on top of a fire hydrant.
If possible, clear hydrants 5 feet on each side.
Snow plow operators should use care not to block rear exit doors at commercial properties.
Also remember to clear walkways and address numbers
These simple steps will help improve response times in emergencies.
Please consider adopting a fire hydrant close to you, and keeping it clear of snow throughout the winter.
Individuals who may have a difficulty in physically clearing the snow around fire hydrants or need to report a buried fire hydrant, please contact the Fire Marshal Tony Collins at (515) 223-1595.
Thank you for your help.
