A Message from the Mayor

                                                                                                                                    Mayor Les Aasheim

Les Aasheim was re-elected Mayor at the election held November 8, 2005. Mayor Aasheim's term will expire in 2009.

Mr. Aasheim is serving his second full term as Mayor and he also served for a one-year mayoral term in 2001.   He previously served on the Clive City Council from 1986 to 1998, and for a brief period in 2000 and 2001.  He retired in 1999 after serving for twenty-two years as principal at Stilwell Junior High in West Des Moines.

Today, Mr. Aasheim represents the city as Chair of the Metro Advisory Council (MAC), chair of the Des Moines Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, past chair of the Mid-Iowa Association of Local Governments.  He previously served on the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), the Des Moines Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA), the Metro Solid Waste Agency, Clive Civil Service Commission, Clive Parks and Recreation Committee, and the Clive Community Development Association.  In addition to these activities, Mr. Aasheim is a member of the Clive Lions and the Clive Historical Society.  He and his wife, Sharon, reside at 8011 Northwest Drive.

From the July 2009 Clive City Newsletter:

Flag Replacement Program— Thank you to the many residents and organizations who contributed to our flag replacement program.  As of the writing of this column, we have received donations totaling over $2000 from individuals and civic groups with a pledge of significant funds from the Clive Chamber of Commerce.  This still leaves us short of our total goal of placing flags on the main north and south roadways in Clive, but does provide us the opportunity to gradually achieve that over a longer term.  The display is so attractive and I want to make sure we maintain it on a consistent basis so that we don’t face major replacements every few years.  Your monetary donation to the City of Clive flag program is a tax deductible contribution.

City Government—The City of Clive is very fortunate to have a number of citizens who volunteer for the various city committees, boards, and commissions.  There are so many people who bring passion and expertise to assist in making our community a great place to live, work and recreate.  As mayor, I really appreciate these contributions.  We have also been fortunate to have outstanding individuals willing to place their names on the ballot for city council seats.   Serving as a council member is a very public and serious responsibility and requires consideration of many complex matters.   Council members may not always agree on every issue, but again we all strive for a common goal of providing good government and to wisely plan for the future.  Our council members work very well together and serve with a common purpose.

In odd number years, either two or three seats on the five member council will be up for election or re-election.  Therefore, the municipal elections of 2009 and 2011 will feature council member elections to four-year terms.  (The mayor also serves a four-year term with an election or re-election in 2009.)  My purpose in mentioning this is to encourage interested citizens to serve their community by volunteering for committees, boards or commissions and to consider the possibility of serving on the city council.  City council responsibilities cover a wide variety of policy making and other activities and each council member also generally serves on metro-wide committees and agencies.

Information concerning city election rules and timelines may be obtained from Pam Blessman, Clive City Clerk.

As always, it is a privilege to serve as your mayor.  Please feel free to contact me if you have questions or concerns.
