Clive Public Works Director

The City of Clive is currently accepting applications for the position of Public Works Director. This position is responsible for the supervision, coordination and performance of the engineering and operations divisions of the Public Works Department, including service areas of roadway administration/maintenance, water distribution, sanitary sewer conveyance and stormwater maintenance. The Public Works Director reports to and will be appointed by the City Manager. The Director serves as a key member of the management team and serves as the City liaison to a number of regional entities within the Des Moines metropolitan area, as well the Iowa Departments of Natural Resources and Transportation.

Clive is a fast growing (2010 population of 15,447), progressive community located on the western side of the Des Moines metropolitan area. Clive combines urban amenities with first rate school systems, a wide variety of housing options, a safe family environment, and an unsurpassed quality of life.

To be considered, candidates must have the minimum of a bachelor’s degree in public works administration or a related field, with a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering and a license to practice as a professional civil engineer preferred. A minimum of ten years in public works with a minimum of five years of increasingly responsible experience in managing or directing engineering, public works, or municipal utility operations is desired. On the job experience must include management of personnel.

Candidates should have dynamic leadership and management qualities including problem solving, decision making, strategic planning, human relations and diplomacy; a high level of integrity and honesty; a commitment to providing top-notch roadway and utility infrastructure maintenance; and competency in the principles and practices of engineering and public works operations.

The Director will be responsible for management and direction of the Public Works Department activities and an $8.9 million budget, including Road Use, Water Utility, Sewer Utility and Stormwater Utility, while supervising a staff of 29 full-time staff.

Minimum entry salary of $100,000, competitive based on qualifications, plus an excellent benefit package.

GIS Intern
The City of Clive, Iowa seeks a GIS Intern for the spring of 2015. This position offers valuable exposure to a variety of GIS, utility infrastructure management, and planning activities. In this role, the intern will perform various duties that include but are not limited to: preparing, creating and editing GIS data; interpreting site plans and engineering documents; gathering data in the field via GPS systems; developing GIS data utilizing data editing techniques; and exercising critical thinking to accomplish project goals.

The GIS intern position is funded for approximately 15 to 20 hours per week at a rate of pay of $12.20 per hour.

The ideal candidate will be familiar with basic GIS principles and ESRI GIS software (ArcMap, ArcCatalog, etc); is able to work independently; is a self starter, and a quick learner. Working knowledge of GPS equipment and a basic understanding of utility systems is desirable.

PROGRAM LEADERS - $9.75-$10.95/HOUR
This position organizes activities, crafts, field trips and guest speakers for the Sport and Nature programs, Youth Tee-Ball, Youth Soccer and the Campers Sports Program.  Lesson plans, first aid and purchasing supplies for the program are part of the duties along with planning assistants and volunteer duties.  Reports to the Recreation Supervisor and must work and communicate well with children and parents.  Also helps schedule staff and volunteers.

PROGRAM ASSISTANTS - $8.50-$9.40/HOUR
This position is to help the Recreation Leader with making samples of the crafts for the day, assist in planning activities, supervising kids and first aid.

CONCESSION STANDS WORKERS - $8.25-$9.15/HOUR
Staff will make and sell food items such as candy, hot dogs, popcorn, nachos and sandwiches warmed in a microwave.  They will open/close up the stand, serve various food items, count money and clean up at night’s end.  Additional duties include recording softball/volleyball scores and assisting with general first aid when needed and other duties of the concession stand staff.  Great opportunity to make extra money during the summer.  Concession stand is in use 6-7 days a week from 5:30 pm-10:30 pm or at the aquatic center 11:30 am-7:00 pm.

PARK MAINTENANCE - 40 hours per week/approx. 6 months/$11.25-$12.45 per hour.
This position requires applicant to be at least 18 years of age and have a good driving record.  Job duties include mowing the parks, cleaning shelters, dragging and lining softball fields, building and grounds maintenance, landscaping and other general labor.  Hours are 7:30 am-4:00 pm, Monday through Friday with some weekend overtime.

LIBRARY PROGRAM LEADER - $9.75-10.95/HOUR
This position assists with the Library programs for children by providing support services, prepares materials and room set-up for Library programs and assists with readers’ assistance/advisory at the Children’s Room desk when assigned. Reports directly to the Youth Services Librarian, and requires a high level of skill in customer service. One or more years of college required. Preferred background in early childhood education or elementary education.

SUMMER RECREATION INTERN - $9.75-$10.95/HOUR
Working directly under the Parks and Recreation Supervisors, duties will include planning and coordinating recreation programs, administering programs, aquatics operations, administrative duties, daily operations, assist with special events and opportunity for park maintenance. The position will include a wide range of activities from Clive’s aquatic facility to youth through adult programming and leagues.  Applications for Summer Recreation Intern must be received by February 27, 2015.

  

Clive Aquatic Center

LIFEGUARD - $8.92-$10.32/HOUR
Lifeguards create a safe aquatic center for patrons by enforcing facility rules and policies, scanning area of coverage, cleaning duties as assigned and supervising young children, teens and adult patrons. Job entails effective communication with supervisors, co-workers and facility patrons. Applicants need to be willing to work outside, as this is an outdoor facility. Hours are flexible. Must be 16 years of age and hold current lifeguard, first aid and CPR/AED certification. Applications accepted until end of March. 

SWIM LESSON INSTRUCTOR (WSI) - $10.11-$11.70/HOUR
Instructors provide appropriate class activities and documentation for all levels of participants using the safety recommendations and skill progressions of the American Red Cross. The instructor is also responsible for communicating with class participants and relaying pertinent information to the Recreation Supervisor. Group and private lessons are offered 8:15-11:00 AM and 5:30-8:45 PM. Must be 16 years of age and hold current WSI certification. Applications accepted until end of March. 

CONCESSION AND ADMISSION PERSONNEL - $8.25-$9.15/hour
Staff is needed to work at the Clive Aquatic Center. Job entails operation of the admissions system, various concession equipment, preparing and serving foods, using cash register, making change, counting money, answering phones, cleaning as assigned, and performing other front line duties as required. Hours of operation range from 11:15 AM – 7:30 PM at the Aquatic Center. Must be 16 years of age. Applications accepted until end of March.
