Rain Barrels
In partnership with Metro Waste Authority and The Woodsmith Store, the City of Clive has created a Rain Barrel Cost-Share Program. The Rain Barrel Cost-Share program is a reimbursable program available only to City of Clive residents. The City will provide a one-time $50 rebate for the first 50 customers for a limited time. The rain barrels for this program are available for purchase only at The Woodsmith Store who is also offering a 10% discount off the purchase price for Clive residents. You can choose from three different styles of rain barrels.
Rain barrels provide an innovative way to capture rainwater from your roof and store it for later use. Water collected from rain barrels can be used to water lawns, gardens, and indoor plants. This water would otherwise run off your roof through downspouts and become stormwater, picking up pollutants on its way to a storm drain or waterway. With rain barrels, you can lower your water bill, conserve water in the dry season, and reduce polluted stormwater runoff.
This direct runoff can contribute to flooding in developed areas with a lot of impervious surface (like roofs, sidewalks, parking lots, and other surfaces that don’t allow rain water to drain). This runoff carries with it pollutants that contribute to poor water quality that can affect the health of local waterways and even your drinking water. These issues are of particular importance in highly developed areas as more impervious surfaces cause more runoff during a rain or snow event.
A rain barrel won't solve the flooding issue by holding back all the stormwater, however it is a good start and it gets homeowners thinking about water conservation. Not only do rain barrels conserve water and control runoff, they can give you a good idea about the large amounts of stormwater that is shed from impervious surfaces.
To participate in the Rain Barrel Program you must first contact Lisa Schmidt at City Hall (223-6220, lschmidt@cityofclive.com) and request an application for the program. You will not receive the discount from The Woodsmith Store in Clive (10320 Hickman Road) unless you have the required paperwork.
