Rick Roe, Fire Chief/Executive Fire Officer
Rick Roe Chief Roe has been with the Clive Fire Department since 1989, starting as a paid-on-call member and being appointed Chief in 1998.  He attended Central College in Pella, Iowa, graduating in 1989 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Management.  Chief Roe holds the designations of Executive Fire Officer thru the National Fire Academy and Chief Fire Officer thru the Commission on Professional Credentialing.  In addition, Chief Roe is also a former President of Polk County Fire Chiefs Association, a former President of Iowa Association of Professional Fire Chiefs, a member of Missouri Valley Division of the International Association of Professional Fire Chiefs, and a Governor Appointed Member of Iowa Statewide Interoperable Communications Systems Board, as well  as being a member of Polk County Emergency Management Committee, Polk County E911 Board, and WestCom Regional Communications Center Management Committee. Prior to being hired as Chief in Clive, he worked as a Pension Consultant at the Principal Financial Group.
 
Tony Collins, Fire Marshal
Fire Marshal Tony Collins has been with the Clive Fire Dept in several different capacities since 1996 and was the city's first full time Paramedic.  He has held his current position as Fire Marshal since 2004 and was Chief of EMS from ’97-’04.  Chief Collins served on several local EMS agencies throughout the metro area throughout his career including over 15 years as a Critical Care Flight Paramedic with Iowa Methodist's Life Flight.  Chief Collins is a member of the American Red Cross Critical Incident Stress Mgmt. Team, Iowa Fire Marshal’s Assn., Iowa Chapter  Int’l Assn. of Arson Investigators, Hawkeye State Fire Safety Assoc. and the Iowa EMS Assn to name a few.  Chief Collins is a frequent presenter of a variety of EMS, Fire, and Life Safety topics to public and private audiences throughout the state.
 
Brian Helland, Assistant Chief--EMS

Brian Helland

Assistant Chief Brian Helland began with the Clive Fire Dept. in 2008 in his current position of Chief of EMS.  Prior to his arrival with the CFD, Chief Helland held administrative EMS positions with West Des Moines EMS, and Overland Park, KS FD.  In addition to being a veteran paramedic in the field, Chief Helland is also a respected instructor of EMS having taught many basic and advanced level EMT classes, and is a regular presenter at continuing education seminars.  In addition, Chief Helland has been a long advocate and instructor of CPR to the general public and has dedicated countless hours to this cause.  In 2011, Chief Helland was recognized as the American Heart Association’s Health Care Professional of the Year.  Chief Helland sits on several regional, state, and national advisory committee’s, of which, an abbreviated list includes Iowa Comprehensive Cardiovascular and Stroke Task Force, American Heart Association’s Mission Lifeline Iowa STEMI Task Force, President of the Central Iowa EMS Service Directors, Iowa Trauma Education Foundation, and Iowa CPR Education Foundation.  Chief Helland is also a member of several professional organizations including American Heart Association, Advanced Life Support Committee, National Association of EMT’s, Iowa EMS Association, and the National Association of EMS Educators.

 
Dave Lyons, Assistant Chief--Fire Operations

Assistant Chief Dave Lyons began with the Clive Fire Dept. in 1990 and has held the positions of FF/Medic, Lieutenant, Training Officer, and Captain prior to his current position of Assistant Chief.  In addition to his current role as Assistant Chief, he also acts as a fire investigator and plays a critical role in department training.  Chief Lyons also served concurrently as a paid-on-call lieutenant for the West Des Moines FD for 5 years and was a volunteer for both Lyon and Warren Co. Ambulance services.  Chief Lyon’s educational background includes a BA from Simpson College and is a graduate from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy. 

Chief Lyons works full time locally as an Insurance Claims Manager.

Dr. James Poole, Medical Director
Dr. James Poole has been the Medical Director of the Clive Fire Dept. since August of 2008.  Dr. Poole graduated with Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine in May 2002 from Des Moines Medical University, and then completed his residency in Emergency Medicine June of 2006 with Integris Medical Center in Oklahoma City, OK.  Dr. Poole is currently a full time Emergency Physician with Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.  His professional society memberships include the American Osteopathic Association, American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians, American College of Emergency Physicians, and the Polk County Medical Society.  Dr. Poole also currently serves as the Medical Director to Mercy College of Health Sciences, Pleasantville EMS, and the Windsor Heights Fire Dept. James Poole
 
Joni Wilkinson, Administrative Assistant

Joni Wilkinson

Administrative Assistant Joni Wilkinson has been with the Clive Fire Department since September 1994 when she was hired as a part-time secretary to the Fire Chief.   She was hired as a full-time administrative assistant in 1996.    She is dedicated to providing behind the scenes support to the department so that daily department operations continue to run smoothly. Joni also serves as a jail matron for the Clive Police Department.  Her educational background includes a Bachelor's of Music Education from Oklahoma Baptist University and Masters of Divinity from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.   Joni's husband Terry, a pastor in West Des Moines, also serves as a volunteer chaplain for both the Clive Fire and Police Departments.
