Police Chief

The City of Clive is accepting applications for the position of Police Chief due to the upcoming retirement of the present Chief. The Police Chief is a civil service police officer position and is appointed by the City Manager. The Civil Service Commission will develop a list of individuals deemed qualified for consideration to be hired for the position. The Police Chief reports to and will be appointed by the City Manager. The Police Chief functions as a key member of the management team. Clive is a fast growing (2010 population of 15,447), progressive community located on the western side of the Des Moines metropolitan area. Clive combines urban amenities with first rate school systems, a wide variety of housing options, a safe family environment, and an unsurpassed quality of life.

To be considered, candidates must have the minimum of a bachelor's degree in criminal justice, public administration, political science or a related field and a minimum of five years of increasingly responsible experience in a public law enforcement agency. Completion of the FBI's National Academy or equivalent will be considered a plus. On the job experience must include management of personnel. If not already certified as an Iowa Law Enforcement Officer, the successful candidate must be able to obtain ILEA certification within one year of employment by the City. Candidates should have extensive law enforcement experience; dynamic leadership & management qualities including problem solving, decision making, strategic planning, human relations and diplomacy; a high level of integrity & honesty; a commitment to progressive policing methods that emphasize community oriented service delivery through partnerships, problem solving and prevention; and competency in working with technological advances. A physical agility test will be conducted of non-ILEA certified semi-finalist candidates to determine each candidate's ability to meet the Department's and State of Iowa's physical standards. A background investigation will be conducted.

The Chief will be responsible for management and direction of the Police Department activities and a $3 million budget while supervising a staff of 23 sworn officers and 4 support staff. Parks and Recreation - Summer Intern

 

The City of Clive, Iowa seeks an individual for the summer 2012 Parks and Recreation Intern.  Clive is one of the fastest growing cities in Iowa and is regarded by many as one of the most desirable areas in the Des Moines metropolitan area.

 

Duties -Working directly under the Recreation Supervisor, duties will include planning and coordinating recreation programs, administering programs, administrative duties, daily operations, assist with special events, and opportunity for park maintenance. The position will include a wide range of activities from Clive’s aquatic facility to youth through adult programming and leagues.

 

City Requirements - The ideal candidate will be a student who is currently majoring in Parks and Recreation, Leisure Studies, or related field.  The intern must be sports/activity minded, and possess the ability and desire to work with people of all ages.  

 

Rate of Pay - The rate of pay is $10.05 per hour.

Aquatic Center - Seasonal

LIFEGUARD - $8.68/HOUR

Lifeguards create a safe aquatic center for patrons by enforcing facility rules and policies, scanning area of coverage, cleaning duties as assigned, and supervising young children, teens, and adult patrons. Job entails effective communication with supervisors, co-workers and facility patrons. Applicants need to be willing to work outside, as this is an outdoor facility. Hours are flexible. Must be 16 years of age and hold current lifeguard, first aid, and CPR certification. Applications accepted until end of March.

 

SWIM LESSON ASSISTANT - $8.21/HOUR

Assistants help instruct learn to swim classes in a safe, effective manner using the safety recommendations of the American Red Cross. Communication and leadership skills are needed to work with youth, parents, and instructors. Group and private lessons are offered 8:15-11:00 AM and 5:30-8:45 PM, as well as on your own time. Must be 16 years of age. Applications accepted until end of March.

 

SWIM LESSON INSTRUCTOR (WSI) - $9.57/HOUR

Instructors provide appropriate class activities and documentation for all levels of participants using the safety recommendations and skill progressions of the American Red Cross. The Instructor is also responsible for communicating with class participants and relaying pertinent information to the Recreation Supervisor. Group and private lessons are offered 8:15-11:00 AM and 5:30-8:45 PM. Must be 16 years of age and hold current WSI certification. Applications accepted until end of March.

CONCESSION AND ADMISSION PERSONNEL - $7.80/HOUR

Staff is needed to work at the Clive Aquatic Center and at parks facilities. Job entails operation of the admissions system, various concession equipment, preparing and serving foods, using cash register, making change, counting money, answering phones, cleaning as assigned, and performing other front line duties as required. At park facilities, duties include recording softball/volleyball scores. Hours of operation range from 11 AM - 8:00 PM at the Aquatic Center. Must be 16 years of age. PROGRAM LEADERS - $9.12/HOUR

This position organizes activities, crafts, field trips, and guest speakers for the Sport and  Nature programs, Youth Tee-Ball, Youth Soccer and the Campers Sports Program.  Lesson plans, first aid and purchasing supplies for the program are part of the duties along with planning assistants and volunteer duties.  Reports to the Recreation Supervisor and must work and communicate well with children and parents.  Also helps schedule staff and volunteers.

PROGRAM ASSISTANTS - $8.21/HOUR

This position is to help the Recreation Leader with making samples of the crafts for the day, assist in planning activities, supervising kids, and first aid.

CONCESSION STAND WORKERS - $7.80/HOUR

Staff will make and sell food items such as candy, hot dogs, popcorn, nachos, and warm sandwiches in a microwave.  They will open/close up the stand, serve various food items, count money, and clean up at night’s end.  Recording softball/volleyball scores and assisting with general first aid when needed are also duties of the concession stand staff.  Great opportunity to make extra money during the summer.  Concession stand is in use 6-7 days a week from 5:30 PM – 10:30 PM or at the aquatic center 11:30 AM-7:00 PM

PARK MAINTENANCE I or II - $9.12 or $10.51/HOUR

This position requires applicant to be at least 18 years of age and have a good driving record.  Job duties include mowing the parks, cleaning shelters, dragging and lining softball fields, and other general labor.  Hours are 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday with some weekend overtime.
