About MTU'S
What is Automated Meter Reading?
Fixed Network Automated Meter Reading (FNAMR ) is an automated water meter reading system that will be installed in every home and business in Clive over the next five to seven years. The FNAMR system will remotely transmit two meter readings each day to a local collector station that in turn transmits the meter readings to a dedicated computer housed at the Public Works office.
Do I have to be home during installation?
Yes.
Will it affect my DSL internet service?
No. A DSL connection (digital subscriber line) uses a regular telephone line to transmit. MTU’s do not use the telephone line.
How does AMR work?
A Meter Transmitting Unit (MTU) that replaces the existing touch pad reading unit will remotely transmit water meter readings to the Data Collection Units (DCU) located throughout the city. All data is then transmitted to a computer database at the Public Works/Water Department. StarSystem
Why automated meter reading?
The Clive Water Department is constantly looking for ways to improve service to our customers.
Automated Meter Reading will advance this goal by:
- Reading the entire system electronically without meter readers, trucks or handheld equipment.
- Reading the system twice every day.
- Providing up-to–date readings for every meter on a continual basis.
- Immediate response to customer inquiries utilizing detailed usage history.
- Automatically maintaining a detailed usage profile for every meter in the system.
- Automatically detecting meter tampering, theft of service, and equipment malfunction.
What is involved in the installation?
An MTU will be attached by wire to your existing or, if required, new water meter. Standard installation should take 15 to 20 minutes to complete.
Will it cost the customer?
No.
Am I required to have Automated Meter Reading (AMR) installed in my property?
Yes. It is the City’s new standard metering system. There are no other reading options available.
Do installers need to gain access inside my home?
The new MTU requires an additional wire, so inside access is needed to connect additional wiring to your existing meter and is some cases the replacement of the existing wiring will need to be routed to the outside of your home.
Will my water bill go up?
No. Project costs are part of the City’s operating budget and part of the current water rate.
How will I know the installer works for the City of Clive?
All installers will be wearing uniforms with City of Clive identification and driving city vehicles. If you are unsure about the installer’s identity, call the Public Works Department at 515-223-6231 for confirmation.
