Safety Tips for a Flash Flood Event
- First aid kit and essential medications.
- Canned food and can opener.
- Protective clothing, rainwear, and bedding or sleeping bags.
- Battery-powered radio, flashlight, NOAA weather radio and extra batteries.
- Special items for infants, elderly, or disabled family members.
- Identify where you could go if told to evacuate. Choose several places . . . a friend's home in another town, a motel, or a shelter.
- Move valuables, such as papers, furs, jewelry, and clothing to upper floors or higher elevations if the flood threat is imminent.
- Bring outdoor possessions, such as lawn furniture, grills, and trash cans inside, or tie them down securely. This must be done early in the event.
- Make an itemized list of all valuables including furnishings, clothing and other personal property. Keep the list in a safe place.
- Fill your car's gas tank, in case an evacuation notice is issued.
- Do not drive or walk into water that is flowing across low water crossings, bridges, or roadways.
- Plan what to do with your pets.
