Programs
Safety Town
Safety Town is a one week, half-day day camp for children entering kindergarten in the fall. At Safety Town, the children learn about safety. The program is taught by a schoolteacher and a police officer.
There are two modes of teaching the children. One is the classroom experience, where they learn through books, movies, songs, visual aids, etc. The other is experiencing the "thrill of the road"! They do this while riding Big Wheels at our real Safety Town outside. The playground is converted into a series of roads and sidewalks. Buildings are placed strategically, along with stop signs and a working traffic light. The children learn pedestrian safety, following the red, yellow and green traffic lights and obeying stop signs. This, obviously, is the children's favorite part of the day.
Some topics in the Safety Town curriculum include: water, playground, electricity, stranger, police and fire, school bus and poison safety. The children participate through hands-on projects at their tables. There is always something to take home to show mom and dad.
On the last day of the week children graduate. This exciting day ends with a ceremony for the parents. Each child receives a certificate after a short program. The children are always excited to show their families what they've learned. They especially like showing off our Safety Town.
