Greenbelt Park Historical Detail

Originally conceived in 1969, funding for the development of the trail and park was approved nearly 10 years later in the fall of 1979.  Construction began in the summer of 1980 and the trail officially opened for trail users in August of 1980.

Funding for the Greenbelt Trail and Park came from three main sources.

  •  $ 120,000 from a bond issue
  •  $ 75,000 from a Lacom Grant
  •  $ 2,000 from the Isaak Walton League

Today, the Greenbelt has an estimated 45,000 users each year. The Greenbelt is maintained to a very natural state where you may find many native plants, foliage, and wildlife creatures. The park stretches nearly the entire city, just over 8 miles, and is also connected to the Raccoon Regional Trail.
