EMS Division
Training
All persons that want to become emergency medical service providers must undergo initial training that is administered by the State of Iowa Department of Public Health and conducted regionally by designated training centers.
This training involves classroom lecture and practical skills work, clinical rotations, and ambulance "ride along" time. The time required can range from 8 weeks for a First Responder to well over a year a 3-night a week classes, ride time, and clinical rotation for a Paramedic Specialist.
Once the initial training has been completed, on-going training is required. All EMT's in the state of Iowa are required to renew their certifications every two years and during that time are required to obtain a certain amount of "formal" and "optional" continuing education hours (CEH's)
The Clive FIre Department provides the "in-house" training for it's members to have enough CEH's in the 2-year certification cycle to renew their particular certifications.
