EMS Division

There are several different levels of Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification in the State of Iowa.  Currently, the members of the Clive Fire Department represent five of these EMT certifications: (all advanced providers must first acquire their EMT-B)

            EMT- First Responder

            EMT- Basic

            EMT- Paramedic

            EMT- Paramedic Specialist

RN Exception – Paramedic Specialist (Must have obtained EMT-Basic)

In addition to these certifications, some members have taken additional training in various areas and obtained endorsements to their certifications.  These endorsements include:

            Emergency Rescue Technician

            EMS Instructor

Skills Evaluator for State of Iowa EMS testing.

            Critical Care Paramedic

In order to provide the highest level of care in a timely manner, all levels of EMT's in the State of Iowa operate under written protocols and procedures.  These eliminate the time consuming need to radio or telephone a hospital for orders when dealing with the most common out-of-hospital medical emergencies.  Hospitals may still be contacted with requests for orders or with questions when providers feels there is a need.

The Fire Department provides paramedic and paramedic specialist level emergency medical care to the community.  The department operates two Type III Advanced Life Support ambulances along with a paramedic rapid response vehicle.  For more information of the EMS vehicles operated by the Fire Department, please click here.

HIPPA Policy

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), better known as Kassebaum-Kennedy, was named after the two senators who spearheaded the bill.  Passed in 1996 to help people buy and keep health insurance, even when they have serious health conditions, the law sets basic requirements that health plans must meet.  Since states can and have modified and expanded upon these provisions, consumers' protections vary from state to state.

Due to HIPPA regulations, all persons treated or transported by ambulance by the Fire Department are given a handout that explains what the Fire Department can and cannot do with the information about their health that is gathered during the call for help.  They are asked to sign a form that both acknowledges receipt of the HIPPA handout and authorizes the Fire Department to directly bill their insurance carrier for the cost of the ambulance response.  For more information on the HIPAA policy of the Fire Department please click here.
