Recycling and Yardwaste
Recycling
Metro Waste Authority (MWA) implemented the Curb It! Recycling Program in 1994. The initial purpose of the program was to assist the Polk County area in meeting the state's recycling mandate requirements, which say that every community in Iowa must provide some type of recycling opportunities to its residents. The Curb It! Program helps residents recycle more than 18,000 tons of material each year. Since the program began, it has kept more than 15,000 garbage trucks from going to the landfill.
The City provides a bin cover for your Curb It! recycling bin. The bonnet attaches to the bin to protect the item from blowing away and can easily be pulled off and put on by you or those emptying the bins.
If your bin does not have a cover, they are available at Clive City Hall for residents to pick up and install. One bin bonnet is available at no cost to the resident. If additional bonnets are needed for multiple containers or due to damage, please let us know. Call 223-6220 for more information.

The Curb It! Recycling Program WILL NOT take the following items:
- Pizza boxes or other paper items contaminated with food
- Used tissues, napkins, paper towels, etc.
- Toilet paper
- Hazardous materials or containers that once held hazardous materials such as motor oil, varnish, etc.
- Plastic bags, films, wraps
- Toys or other large plastic items
- Flower pots
- Food storage containers
- Spray nozzles or pumps
Key Things to Remember:
Where?
On your designated recycling day, place your Curb It! recycling bin at the same location that you normally place your solid waste container.
When?
You are encouraged to put your Curb It! recycling bin out prior to 7:00 a.m. on the day of collection in order to avoid a missed pickup.
How Much?
Limit corrugated cardboard each week to no more than four flattened boxes. Also, limit the phone books to two books per pick-up. If you have more than this, please save it until the next recycling pickup day, or utilize a drop-off recycling site.
Remember to fill the recyling bin to the rim and no higher. The recycling bin bonnet is not to allow for overstuffing the bin, it is to protect items from flowing away.

Premium Compost It! Yard Waste Program
Clive residents who use the City’s solid waste services are eligible to sign up for Clive and Metro Waste Authority’s Premium Yard Waste Collection Program. This program will allow participating residents the opportunity to use a 96-gallon wheeled container for weekly collection of their yard waste. This program is an alternative yard waste collection method and does not replace the current Compost It! program that utilizes the MWA Compost It! bags and stickers.
To Enroll
Complete an enrollment form and mail or deliver it with your payment to Clive City Hall. Residents should enroll early, during the month or March, to be guaranteed a container for the start of yard waste season. Upon receipt of payment, the city will deliver the yard waste container to your driveway and mail a sticker to your home, which will need to be affixed to your container.
Residents that already have a Premium Yard Waste Container will only need to purchase the seasonal sticker. Click here for the form or by going to the MWA website at www.mwatoday.com and pay using a credit card. Note: you cannot purchase a container online, just the sticker.
