University Avenue Asphalt Resurfacing and Median Replacement Project

Updates:

9/30/2016: In addition to the ongoing sidewalk ramp and manhole adjustment work, the Contractor will be completing additional full depth patching at the west end of the project near the northbound off ramp of Interstate 35/80 beginning Sunday, October 2, 2016.  Eastbound lane closures at this location will be in place overnight between the hours of 8:00 pm and 6:00 am.  All impacted lanes will be reopened each morning prior to the am rush. The work is expected to be completed by Friday, October 7, 2016 dependent on weather.  At least one eastbound lane of traffic will remain open at all times. Dependent on patch locations, some eastbound and northbound turning movements in and around the work zone may be restricted. Flaggers will be present to direct the traveling public.

9/23/2016: The Contractor anticipates completing sidewalk ramp replacements in the next two weeks dependent on weather.  Most of the remaining ramps are west of NW 100th Street/Valley West Drive.  Other remaining work items include final adjustments of manholes and placement of permanent pavement markings.  Lane closures will be in place as needed to complete this construction.  It is anticipated that these remaining work items should be completed by the end of October.

9/9/2016: Spot lane closures along University Avenue will again be needed next week as the Contractor continues with sidewalk ramp replacement.  Work is currently taking place at the intersection NW 100th Street/Valley West Drive and will proceed west from there in the coming weeks.

8/26/2016: Lane closures will again be in place next week predominantly east of NW 100th Street/Valley West Drive as the Contractor continues with sidewalk ramp replacements.

8/23/2016: With the completion of asphalt paving in Division 5 last night, no additional overnight full closures are anticipated on University Avenue.  Lane closures will be in place as the Contractor completes sidewalk ramp replacements and manhole adjustments generally moving from east to west along the corridor.  Weekly updates will continue to be provided during completion of these final work items.

8/22/2016: The full closure will again be in place tonight in Division 5 between NW 114th/50th Street and the east ramps of Interstate 35/80.  Similar to last night, the intersection of NW 114th/50th Street will be fully closed between the hours of 9:00 pm and 6:00 am while the Contractor places the final 1.5 inches of asphalt in this area.

8/19/2016: Asphalt paving in Division 4 was completed last night.  As a result, paving operations will move to Division 5 between NW 114th/50th Street and the east ramps of Interstate 35/80 beginning Sunday, August 21st.  Work in this area will fully close the NW 114th/50th Street intersection between the hours of 9:00 pm and 6:00 am and is expected to be completed over the course of two nights.  Elsewhere along the corridor lane closures will be in place east of NW 100th Street/Valley West Drive next week for sidewalk reconstruction.

8/18/2016: The Contractor will require one additional night to finish asphalt paving in Division 4.  As a result, a full closure will again be in place between the NW 104th/42nd Street intersection and the NW 114th/50th Street intersection between the hours of 9:00 pm and 6:00 am tonight.  It is also anticipated that some additional milling further west in Division 5 will be completed overnight with lane closures in place.

8/17/2016: The full closure tonight will again be in Division 4 between the intersection of NW 104th/42nd Street and NW 114th/50th Street. The Contractor will be placing the final 1.5 inches of asphalt in this area between the hours of 9:00 pm and 6:00 am.

8/16/2016: The full closure area will move west to Division 4 tonight between the NW 104th Street / 42nd Street intersection and the NW 114th Street / 50th Street intersection.  Both of these intersections will remain open to north/south traffic and turning movements during work in this area.  Since the milling in this Division has been completed, the Contractor will begin immediately placing the first 1.5 inches of asphalt between the hours of 9:00 pm and 6:00 am overnight

8/15/2016: The Contractor will require one additional night to finish asphalt paving of Stage 3.  As a result, a full closure will again be in place from just west of NW 100th Street / Valley West Drive through the intersection of NW 104th Street / 42nd Street between the hours of 9:00 pm to 6:00 am tonight.  It is also anticipated that some milling further west in Stage 4 will also be completed overnight with lane closures in place.

During the day this week, sidewalk ramps and adjacent curb will continue being replaced.  This work will follow the asphalt paving as it proceeds from east to west along the corridor and will require spot lane closures to complete.

8/11/2016: There will be no closures in place or work completed tonight on University Avenue because of predicted rain in the overnight weather forecast. The Contractor will return to Division 3 west of NW 100th Street / Valley West Drive on Sunday night to continue asphalt paving operations.

8/10/2016: The full closure area will move west to Division 3 tonight.  This area extends from just west of NW 100th Street / Valley West Drive through the intersection of NW 104th Street / 42nd Street. The majority of milling has been previously completed in this Division. Therefore, the Contractor will begin placing the first 1.5 inches of asphalt between the hours of 9:00 pm and 6:00 am overnight.

8/9/2016: The Contractor will require one additional night to finish asphalt paving of Stage 2.  As a result, a full closure will again be in place from NW 92nd Street through the NW 100th Street / Valley West Drive intersection between the hours of 9:00 pm and 6:00 am tonight.

8/7/2016: A full closure in Stage 2 from NW 92nd Street through the intersection of NW 100th Street / Valley West Drive will again be in place tonight from 9:00 pm to 6:00 am while the Contractor places the final 1.5 inches of asphalt in this area.  Depending on how work progresses tonight, another night of closures on this Division may be needed to complete the remaining asphalt work.

8/5/2016: Milling in Stage 2 was completed last night under a full closure from NW 92nd Street west through the intersection of NW 100th Street/Valley West Drive.  Overnight paving operations will resume in this same closure area beginning Sunday night (August 7th) at 9:00 pm.  Additional work to complete paving in Stage 1 between NW 86th Street/22nd Street may occur during this same time frame with lane closures in place.  Under this scenario, the NW 100th Street/Valley West Drive intersection will again be closed Sunday night.  The NW 86th Street/22nd Street intersection will remain open.

8/4/2016: The full closure area will shift west tonight and stretch from NW 92nd Street through the intersection of NW 100th Street / Valley West Drive.  As a result, the intersection of University Avenue and NW 100th Street / Valley West Drive will be closed.  Message boards and detour signage will route the traveling public around the closure area.  Lane closures will also be in place further to the east between NW 86th Street / 22nd Street and NW 92nd Street while crews finish paving left turn lanes on this section of the project.  All work will again be completed between the hours of 9:00 pm and 6:00 am.

8/3/2016: The same section of University Avenue between NW 86th Street/22nd Street and NW 92nd Street will be closed again tonight.  The Contractor will be placing the final 1.5 inches of asphalt in this area under a full closure between the hours of 9:00 pm and 6:00 am.  Depending on progress made overnight, paving of some remaining left turn lanes may be completed during the day tomorrow utilizing lane closures for short stretches.

8/2/2016: The first full closure associated with asphalt paving occurred last night on the east end of the project between NW 86th Street/22nd Street and NW 92nd Street.  The Contractor completed milling and other preparatory work during this initial closure.  This same section of University Avenue is scheduled to be fully closed again tonight between the hours of 9:00 pm and 6:00 am to place the first 1.5 inches of new asphalt pavement.  Work in the area may be postponed if rainy conditions persist or are predicted overnight.

7/22/2016:  The Contractor will be completing night patching in the intersection of NW 100th Street and removing the island in the NW corner of University and NW 86th Street this Sunday night.  The island will be poured back Monday morning.  All remaining intake replacements and full-depth patching will be completed by the middle of next week.  These are the last remaining items of work to be completed prior to starting asphalt paving operations.

The paving subcontractor will mobilize to the site next week to begin milling operations.  Butt joints will be milled at entrances and intersection returns to ensure that the new asphalt will match existing pavement in these locations.  This work will be completed during the day utilizing lane closures in the outside lanes in both directions of travel.  Total length of lane closures will again be approximately 1500 feet in length with one lane of traffic in each direction remaining open.

The paving subcontractor has scheduled asphalt resurfacing to begin on Monday night, August 1st at the east end (NW 86th Street) of the project.  Once again, the asphalt overlay will be completed overnight between the hours of 9:00 pm and 6:00 am with full closures and associated detours in place.  All lanes of University Avenue will be reopened each morning with traffic allowed on the newly paved sections.  Once started, these asphalt paving operations could take up to three weeks to complete dependent on weather.  Daily construction updates will be provided during asphalt paving operations. Please send an e-mail to UniversityProject@cityofclive.com to have your name added to the distribution list.

7/8/2016: The remaining intakes and full-depth patches are expected to be completed in the next two weeks.  Based on this, the Contractor has tentatively scheduled asphalt resurfacing to begin the week of July 24th.  This is subject to change based on weather and how work progresses in the next two weeks.  As a reminder, the asphalt overlay will be completed overnight between the hours of 9:00 pm and 6:00 am with full closures and associated detours in place.  All lanes of University will be reopened each morning with traffic allowed on the newly paved sections.  These asphalt paving operations could take up to three weeks to complete dependent on weather.

6/24/2016: Similar to the past few weeks, crews will continue to work on intake reconstructions and full-depth patching in the outside lanes.  There are sixteen (16) intakes requiring reconstruction; eight (8) have been completed to-date.

6/17/2016: Intake and patching work in the outside lanes will continue next week requiring pot closures similar to what has been experienced most recently along the corridor.  Closures around the most recent intake pours will again need to remain in place over the weekend.

6/10/2016:  The Contractor is currently working on intake reconstructions and full-depth patching in the outside westbound lanes between NW 104th and NW 109th Streets.  Because the intake reconstructions require multiple concrete pours to complete, this closure will need to remain in place over the weekend.  Similar outside lane closures lengths will be required as the work progresses over the next few weeks to complete additional intakes.

6/3/2016:  The Contractor is expected to return to the job site next week to complete additional patching in the outside lanes and start intake reconstructions.  Required outside lane closures will be limited to approximately 1,200 feet in length.  One lane of travel in each direction, as well as access to commercial entrances and side streets will remain open.  The intakes and remaining patches are expected to take approximately one month to complete dependent on weather.

5/27/2016:  The Contractor was able to complete work on the remaining medians to NW 86th Street/22nd Street in spite of some rainy conditions this week.  As of yesterday, all median removals and replacements have been completed on the project.  Site clean-up and traffic control/lane closure removals are expected to be completed by noon today prior to the Memorial Day weekend.  Work on the corridor is expected to be light next week with only minimal lane closures in place associated with additional patches in the eastbound outside lanes and intake reconstruction in the westbound outside lanes.

5/20/2016: Favorable weather conditions allowed work to progress at a faster than expected pace this week east of NW 100th Street/Valley West Drive.  The median removal process was also much easier than anything previously experienced on the project.  Median removal and replacement and interior patches to the NW 90th Street/28th Street intersection were completed yesterday.  Normal traffic patterns have been reestablished and will remain so over the weekend.  The Contractor will continue east in an attempt to complete the remaining medians to NW 86th Street/22nd Street next week.  Progress, as always, will be dependent on weather as there is rain in the forecast every day next week

5/13/2016: Medians and interior patches are now complete west of NW 100th Street/Valley West Drive.  The Contractor will continue next week in the same fashion moving easterly away from this intersection.  Based on how the work has progressed to date, it is expected to take approximately four more weeks dependent on weather to complete the remaining median removals and replacements between NW 100th Street/Valley West Drive and NW 86th Street/22nd Street.

5/6/2016: Three additional medians were removed and replaced this week. Patching and median replacement work will continue next week starting near the commercial entrance to Starbucks/Kohl’s/Home Depot and proceeding east towards NW 100th Street/Valley West Drive. The contractor completed several patches this morning and expects to have all lane closures removed by mid-afternoon today. Once again, no work or lane closures are anticipated this weekend.

4/29/2016: The first four medians east of the NW 114th / 50th Street intersection have been removed and replaced.  Patching and median replacement work will continue next week beginning at the intersection of NW 104th / 42nd Street.  Lane closure lengths and traffic patterns in the work zone will be laid out in a similar fashion to what has been experienced the last two weeks as work has progressed from west to east along the corridor.  To reiterate, the total length of lane closures will remain approximately 1500 feet with the outer lanes in each direction and interior access points remaining open.  Also, it is still the Contractor’s intention moving forward to not perform work or have any lane closures in place on weekends.

4/21/16: Rain this week has slowed construction progress.  The first median east of NW 114th/50th Street intersection was poured back Tuesday afternoon.  Additional replacement pours for the next two medians are still scheduled for today (Thursday) and tomorrow (Friday) dependent on weather.  Median and patching work will continue in a similar fashion from west to east along the corridor.  As one median is reopened, the next in line to the east will be removed.  Total length of lane closures will remain approximately 1500 feet with the outer lanes in each direction and interior access points remain open.  No work or lane closures are anticipated this week.

4/15/16: On Monday, April 18th, the Contractor will begin replacing the center medians on the project.  Work will start at the intersection of NW 114th/50th Street with removal of the first three medians east of the intersection.  In order to provide a safe work zone for the Contractor, the inside lanes adjacent to the medians will be closed.  Full-depth patching of the existing pavement in the closed lanes will also be completed.  The median and patching work in this area is expected to take the remainder of the week to complete dependent on weather.  One lane of traffic in each direction, as well as interior intersection points proving access to commercial entrances and side roads will remain open.  Median and patching work will continue in a similar fashion progressing from west to east along the corridor for the next several weeks.  Assuming good weather conditions during the week, no work or lane closures are expected on weekends.

University Avenue -- Asphalt Resurfacing and Median Replacement Project

An important project scheduled to be completed during the 2016 construction season will be the resurfacing of University Avenue between east ramps of I-35/80 and NW 86th Street (Clive)/22nd Street (West Des Moines).  Please refer to the attached Project Location map.  This project is a joint effort among the City of Clive, West Des Moines, and the Iowa DOT.
